Learning Through Connection

Jenefer Wiltschut (Head of Wellbeing)

At Kolbe, we understand that learning doesn’t always begin in Period 1 when the first instruction is delivered, but that for many of our students it begins much earlier, the moment they enter our community and quietly answer unspoken questions…am I safe here? Do I belong? Can I manage what this day will ask of me?

Most students will arrive and become ready to engage in their learning within the first five minutes of their class. For others, stress, worry, fatigue, or a difficulty that is unseen and unheard by others can make that transition far harder. In those moments, the challenge is not a lack of ability or willingness; it is readiness. When the brain is operating in protection mode, attention narrows, language becomes harder to access, and it is difficult to hold information in mind long enough to learn. A student may look disengaged, oppositional, or withdrawn, but often what we are seeing is a learner who is not yet regulated enough to think clearly; and by this point in the term, it becomes clear that readiness is rarely about motivation alone; it is often about connection.

This is why our Strategic Plan places a clear emphasis on Identity, Connection and Wellbeing: building belonging by developing positive identity, creating meaningful connections, and promoting and supporting wellbeing through intentional action. Guided by our Kinship Touchstone, we want every student to experience Kolbe as a community where they are known, valued and supported to grow. Across the College, staff are strengthening consistent, trauma-informed practices that support all students: predictable routines, warm greetings and clear expectations, calm and respectful communication, flexibility that protects dignity, and restorative approaches that help students make things right and move forward. These everyday actions reduce uncertainty, build trust, and help students return to learning—even after a difficult moment. When a student needs more, our collaborative approach to pastoral and curriculum support enables timely, targeted care that re-establishes predictability, strengthens connection through regular check-ins, and explicitly builds the regulation and learning skills needed to re-enter a ready-to-learn state.

As the pace of the new school year is becoming well-established, we take this opportunity to give thanks for the partnership of families in this work. When school and home share a common commitment to relationship, routine and repair, students are far more likely to flourish—academically, socially and emotionally. In time, these shared practices strengthen attendance, engagement and belonging, while reducing the challenges that can pull students away from learning. Our hope is simple: that every student experiences Kolbe as a place where they are known, supported, and able to flourish.
