Pink Up Kolbe

Jenefer Wiltschut (Head of Wellbeing)

Last Friday saw the Kolbe Community ‘Pink Up’ in support of the McGrath Foundation, an organisation dedicated to raising awareness of the impact of breast cancer across Australia. Sadly, around 57 Australians are diagnosed with breast cancer every day, totalling over 20,000 every year. The McGrath foundation raises funds throughout the year to be able to provide specialised breast care nurses to patients affected by breast cancer. Since 2005 their incredible efforts have been able to provide support to 123,000 families.

Year 10 student leader Leon was the driving force behind the fundraising efforts for Pink Up KCC, and the day was a wonderful success due to his hard work and dedication. Leon’s Mum has received invaluable support from McGrath Foundation nurses during her fight against breast cancer and Leon worked selflessly to raise awareness of the cause.

In the lead up to the day, staff and students were able to purchase special McGrath Foundation pink socks to wear, with staff and students also encouraged to wear pink accessories on the day for a gold coin donation. Our D & T department made a special effort by wearing pink tradie outfits for the day! A special mention also goes to local soap maker ‘Pure Ratbag Soaps” who donated a very special range of pink scented soaps to sell within our community in the weeks leading up to the fundraiser.

The Kolbe community rose to the occasion by supporting Leon and this very worthy cause, donating an overwhelming supply of baked goods and sweet treats for our community bake sale at recess. We had handmade macarons, beautiful cupcakes, pink iced biscuits, and even scented candles to sell, just to name a few! Baker’s delight in Waikiki also generously donated several trays of pink iced finger buns to sell which were a crowd favourite. A very special thanks must also go to the College P&F who very generously donated the supplies for our sausage sizzle at lunchtime. Sausage sizzles are a popular event at Kolbe, and with the support of P&F, as well as our fabulous Year 9 and 10 student leaders who cooked up a storm, all proceeds from the lunch were able to go directly to the Foundation.

With thanks to the generous support of our Kolbe students and families we are very proud to say that a total of $6,075.94 will be making its way to the McGrath Foundation. From the bottom of our hearts…THANK YOU.
