Innovation Rooted in Faith: Honouring Kolbe and Loyola at Kolbe Catholic College
This week, we celebrated Loyola House Day with Mass and shared breakfast, reflecting on the legacy of St Ignatius of Loyola. The founder of the Jesuit order, St Ignatius was a visionary of his time. His creation of the Spiritual Exercises — a structured guide of meditations and prayers — laid the groundwork for spiritual formation that remains influential today. His innovation in spiritual teaching mirrors the kind of forward-thinking we continue to embrace at Kolbe Catholic College.
Our patron, St Maximilian Kolbe, was no less inventive; he was a trailblazer in Catholic media. His magazine Knight of the Immaculata reached a staggering circulation of over 1 million in the 1930s, entirely funded by donations. Ever eager to reach people with the Gospel, he embraced radio — then a cutting-edge technology — to expand his ministry. If he were alive today, I’m sure St Max would be on TikTok and streaming on YouTube.
Inspired by both saints, Kolbe Catholic College fosters a culture of innovation grounded in mission. For over a decade, we have proudly held the status of an Apple Distinguished School, continually integrating emerging technologies to support our vision of forming lifelong learners who are inspired by Jesus to transform the world. This commitment is reflected in our digital learning and celebrated in our recently produced video highlighting this milestone.
Our commitment to innovation extends beyond the classroom into co-curricular excellence. We’re so proud of the Rising Leaders Program, a finalist for a national Educator Award for Best Co-Curricular Design. Founded in 2023, this inclusive leadership initiative invites Year 8 and 9 students of all backgrounds and abilities to develop leadership capabilities. What sets it apart is the mentoring relationship with Year 11 students, who guide participants through workshops, real-world leadership challenges, and personal development experiences.
Unlike traditional programs that rely on formal leadership titles, the Rising Leaders Program nurtures leadership as a set of skills and attitudes available to all. It has become a valued and enjoyable pathway for students stepping into formal leadership roles at Kolbe and in the wider world.
