Week 5 brought Science week to the College. This year, the theme was ‘Species Survival: more than just sustainability’. Students conducted activities in class which included looking at the temperature that water boils – with some surprising results! Other groups looked at Newton’s Laws and how they might affect collisions. Some students were brave enough to try food of the future as they nibbled on mealworms and crickets!
At lunch time, students were treated to some hands-on demonstrations in the WLC throughout the week while they were able to walk through and read some interesting facts about endangered and extinct species and the impact that they may have on the ecosystem and the environment as a whole. Students experienced the Bernoulli Effect and tried to blow up a balloon with one breath, while others were mesmerised by ‘levitating balls’. Air cannons were shooting across the WLC, getting some great distance!
The Year 12 Chemistry students displayed their skills at creating crystal towers. There were mixed results, with one group beating the record, with their tower measuring over 55cm. The science staff were able to recreate some of the scenes from Jurassic Park as they dressed as dinosaurs, though the scientific accuracy of these is still in question. A couple of dinosaurs even made it into the classrooms to visit students at work. Altogether, another great year of scientific fun!
