Shakespeare returns to Kolbe

Robert Armitage (Head of English)

O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?

To support our Year 9 English students who have undertaken an introductory study of William Shakespeare; Kolbe College were once again privileged to be able to host a performance by the highly regarded Bell Shakespeare Theatre Company.

In Week 3 the WLC Tiered seating area was transformed into a makeshift Globe Theatre where all of the Year 9 cohort witnessed a vibrant and humorously immersive performance of the Bell Shakespeare’s production – “Shakespeare is Dead”. This is an ideal “taster” of the life and works of Shakespeare – it not only featured a collection of his ‘best bits’ but was a wonderful way to dismiss any negative, preconceived ideas students may have held about Shakespeare. Plays showcased included Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, Hamlet, Henry V and more.

At the conclusion of the performance students enthusiastically engaged in a Q and A session with the actors and I am certain they left the performance with a very clear appreciation of how the works of this iconic writer still resonate in the 21st century!
