This week, we are thrilled to be celebrating the inaugural STEM Week here at Kolbe. A fun and inspiring event dedicated to showcasing the wonder and importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in our world today. This year we worked under the theme ‘Decoding the Universe’.
Throughout the week, students took part in a wide range of hands-on activities and engaging challenges that bring STEM to life across the curriculum. Each day Pastoral Care groups competed in a brain-teasing quiz, encouraging students to think critically and apply their knowledge in fun, competitive ways.
Around the school, students experimented with dry ice, observing its fascinating properties and learning about states of matter through interactive demonstrations. Students enjoyed seeing some of the things dry ice can do, saying ‘I learnt dry ice will give you frostbite and I enjoyed watching the chemical reactions with dry ice’. Other classes investigated the golden ratio and its connection to patterns in nature, art, and architecture — sparking curiosity about the beauty and structure hidden in numbers.
During lunch times, students were able to explore pendulum motion in a wave machine put together by our amazing lab technicians. Some students were able to get enveloped by a bubble. They completed STEM Lego challenges to put their engineering skills to the test. Maths students presented their answers to the question ‘How can maths knowledge and skills be applied in real-life situations?’ by demonstrating remarkable creative thinking and human ingenuity in applying Pythagoras and Trigonometry to solve real-world environmental and societal problems.
It was exciting to see the enthusiasm and discovery that STEM brought to us this week and we look forward to celebrating the curiosity and innovation of our students into the future!
