This week, I had the privilege of speaking with our staff to thank them for the many ways they help make Kolbe Catholic College such a wonderful place. At the heart of what we do is a simple but powerful hope, that every student feels seen, belongs, and knows they are genuinely cared for.
Recently, we received a beautiful message from a parent reflecting on their child’s transition into high school. They spoke with joy and amazement about the young person their child is becoming, more adventurous, more outgoing, more willing to step forward and try new things. Their child had embraced so many opportunities early in their Kolbe journey; Band, Photography Club, Bushrangers, Art Club and more.
It was a wonderful reminder that growth does not always happen in one grand moment. Sometimes it happens quietly, one opportunity at a time. A student says yes to a club. They turn up to a rehearsal. They join a team. They meet a new friend. They discover they are capable of more than they first imagined.
Being a parent of a teenager can be tough, if your household is like mine, getting a 13 and 14 year old to talk about their day can often feel like pulling teeth… except the teeth answer ‘fine’ and walk away. “How was school?” “Good.” “Can you name a time that made you smile?” “Na.” In can be infuriating and yet, sometimes, beneath those one-word answers, remarkable things are often happening.
Further in this eNews, you will see just a snapshot of the richness of college life. Student representation during Reconciliation Week, LifeLink, HBF Run for a Reason, Drama Night, Inclusive Sports Day, ACC Cross Country, Study Club, Visual Arts and Psychology excursions, and our upcoming College production of Beauty and the Beast.
These opportunities do not happen by accident. They are made possible by the dedication, generosity and commitment of our staff, who give their time, energy and care in countless ways. Even when they may not see the full impact of their efforts, their interactions matter. They provide consistency, encouragement, hope and joy in the lives of our students.
At Kolbe, we encourage our young people to grab opportunities with both hands. To have the Courage to try something new. To have the Faith to trust that growth often begins outside their comfort zone. To pursue Excellence, not through perfection, but through participation, effort and openness to becoming more.
To our students, its inspiring and uplifting when you say yes. Join the club. Audition for the show. Run the race. Ask the question. Serve the community. Try the thing that makes you nervous. You never know what door may open.
To our staff, thank you. Your work creates the conditions where students can flourish. You help build a College where young people are known, valued and invited to grow.
And to our families, thank you for encouraging your children to step forward. Together, we continue to create a community where students are not only educated, but formed with courage, faith and excellence.
